Biodiversity in the 21st Century: New Paradigms for New Challenges
Call for submissions

Biodiversity and Conservation Journal announces a call for papers for a special issue entitled "Biodiversity in the 21st Century: New Paradigms for New Challenges".
Biodiversity is experiencing a significant decline across natural and agricultural ecosystems due to human activities. While the new millennium has introduced opportunities for conservation and sustainable use, it has also brought new challenges, such as climate change, land use expansion, invasive species, and emerging pathogens. These developments have reshaped the strategic importance of biodiversity and the way it is managed sustainably.
This special issue places particular focus on the Mediterranean basin, a region rich in biological diversity—both natural and agricultural—that remains understudied. Assessing biodiversity is a crucial indicator of ecosystem health in this region, especially under increasing environmental pressures.
The issue will feature studies presented at:
The 15th National Conference on Biodiversity and the 2nd International Conference on Mediterranean Biodiversity
(Perugia, Italy – June 3–6, 2025), in addition to other contributions relevant to the issue’s scope.
This special issue aims to:
Share the latest scientific knowledge on the study, conservation, and sustainable use of animal, plant, insect, and microbial biodiversity in the Mediterranean basin.
Address the emerging challenges caused by human activity and climate change in natural and agricultural ecosystems.
Propose innovative solutions and models of intervention—both in situ and ex-situ—that promote sustainable development, incorporate circular economy principles, and align with the European Green Deal and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
