Circular Urban Development & Urban-Industrial Symbiosis

Postdoc

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is offering a 12-month postdoctoral research position focused on circular urban development and industrial symbiosis as part of the EU-funded REDOL project. In this role, you will develop spatial planning scenarios that explore how circular value chains and waste management systems can be implemented in Amsterdam. The research will focus on five key material flows:

  • Packaging

  • Plastics

  • Construction & Demolition Waste (CDW)

  • Textiles

  • Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Responsibilities

  • Analyze the current linear systems (stakeholders, spatial patterns)

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative waste flow analyses (mass flow analysis).

  • Create spatial models for future circular activities and industrial symbiosis

  • Assess potential reduction in solid waste and envision a more circular urban metabolism

  • Help develop strategies for urban-industrial symbiosis and explore the possibility of a circular economy hub in Amsterdam and its harbor. This includes identifying suitable waste processing technologies to test and exploring locally adapted solutions.
