Digital Twin for Climate Resilience Solutions

PhD position

The University of Exeter’s Department of Engineering is inviting applications for a PhD studentship co-funded by the partner institution, IHE Delft in the Netherlands, and the University of Exeter's Faculty of Environment, Science, and Engineering.

This project will focus on developing a prototype digital twin (DT) of a water infrastructure network (potentially also other systems) with some of the following functionalities:

  • Predictive modelling of hydrometeorological events

  • Enhanced preparedness and emergency response

  • Stakeholder engagement

  • Optimised planning, design, monitoring, and adaptation of infrastructure

  • Improved resource and asset management

The goal of this position is to facilitate detailed analysis of climate impacts and optimize resilience strategies. The selected candidate is expected to start on 1 October 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. They will be based at the Centre for Water Systems, within the Faculty of Environment, Science, and Economy, and will spend most of their time at the Streatham Campus in Exeter. The candidate will also be expected to attend two one-week training courses at IHE Delft.
