EUMENA workshop on climate migration and sustainable development in Egypt
Date: 15 December 2024
Organizers: EUMENA, Faculty of Agriculture at Fayoum University, and Faculty of Agriculture at Ain Shams University
Venue: Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University
EUMENA in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture at Fayoum University, and the Faculty of Agriculture at Ain Shams University are organizing a workshop on climate change, migration and sustainable development in Egypt. The workshop will be hosted by the Faculty of Agriculture at Ain Shams University on December 15, 2024.
Rationale: Prolonged droughts and increasing water scarcity due to the unfolding impacts of climate change are having evident impact on both natural and human systems in Egypt. There is a growing consensus among migration and development scholars is that climate-induced water scarcity is closely linked to migration, particularly rural-to-urban migration. Evidence shows that the increased frequency of extreme weather events and dwindling water resources in Egypt are becoming central to explaining environmental migration in the context of climate change. Migration patterns resulting from the combined effects of climate change and water scarcity add further pressure on Egypt’s fragile food system to ensure food supply, generate incomes, and sustain rural livelihoods. This forewarns concerning implications for food security and national efforts to alleviate poverty and achieve sustainable development goals. From a scientific research perspective, the research portfolio on the climate-water-migration nexus widely fails to match the severity of its likely impact on Egypt. Likewise, there is a concerning lack of integration and coherence among strategies addressing the interrelated issues of climate change, water resources management, and migration in Egypt. This fragmentation undermines the effectiveness of efforts to mitigate the anticipated impacts, highlighting the need for a more holistic and interconnected policy.
Specific objectives: The planned workshop aims to build a research consortium comprising researchers specializing in water resource engineering and management, agronomy, and social sciences, with the objective of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to draft a research proposal for future grant applications. To achieve this goal, we will convene a diverse group of stakeholders representing various disciplines and sectors involved in climate change adaptation, water resource management, and food and agricultural systems in Egypt. By bringing together the core research team and stakeholders, the workshop intends to facilitate the exchange of ideas, identify key research priorities, and explore potential avenues for collaboration in proposed research initiatives focusing on the climate-water-migration nexus in Egypt.
The final program of the workshop will be published by mid+November!
