WCRP School on Climate Prediction Across Timescales

Internship

The WCRP School on Climate Prediction Across Timescales will be held from 23–27 February 2026. This intensive one-week school is designed for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career professionals working in climate science and services. The school aims to close key knowledge and skill gaps in forecasting across sub-seasonal to inter-decadal timescales—essential for areas such as disaster preparedness and long-term planning.

Objectives and Outcomes

  • Foster understanding of key concepts such as predictability, forecast skill, sources of predictability, and cross-timescale interactions.

  • Provide an overview of emerging tools to determine predictability and assess forecast skill.

  • Introduce state-of-the-art approaches using machine learning and AI for climate forecasting.

  • Develop practical skills through hands-on lab sessions with real (not synthetic) datasets.

  • Facilitate group discussions and applied data exercises.

Candidate Profile:

  • Graduate students, postdocs, and junior researchers in atmospheric, climate, or data sciences.

  • Professionals working in climate services or operational prediction.

  • Prerequisites:

  • Background in climate science, statistics, or a related field.

  • Basic programming experience is expected; Python proficiency is encouraged.

  • The school will be conducted in English.

  • Total participants: 30 selected applicants.
